FAA Chief Lauds Runway Safety ‘Call To Action’ Response
By Sean Broderick | October 22, 2007
Industry–and airports specifically–have responded well to FAA’s self-described “Call to Action” to improve runway safety, said FAA Acting Administrator Bobby Sturgell. Final Fiscal Year 2007 runway incursion numbers were encouraging, he explained:
The serious incursions — the As and the Bs — were at 24, which is down from 31 the previous year. That’s an all-time low and very good news. C-level incursions are down as well, from 75 to 49. That’s more good news.
Meantime, for FY 2008, FAA has adopted ICAO’s definition for runway incursions. The difference, per FAA’s announcement on the change:
The biggest difference between the two definitions is that ICAO defines a runway incursion as any unauthorized intrusion onto a runway, regardless of whether or not an aircraft presents a potential conflict. For the FAA, an incident without an aircraft in potential conflict — such as an unauthorized aircraft crossing an empty runway — was defined as a “surface incident” and not a runway incursion.
