Sustainability: it’s a movement that has taken off in the airport community, as new construction and renovation of existing properties are designed with the environment at the backbone.

We are pleased to offer two articles in this issue on aspects of airport sustainability: one on the important aspect of sustainability reporting, and the other on creating a sustainable master plan.

iven the recent economic downturn and the often double-digit declines experienced at many airports in terms of passengers and concessions sales, it is timely to review the essential elements of a successful airport concession program. Ideally, this is a program that not only can thrive in good times but also can survive a downturn.
allas/Fort Worth International has launched a major terminal upgrade program that will take eight years and up to $2 billion to finish, resulting in the complete renovation of the airport’s four original terminals — A, B, C E — all of which opened in 1974.Funding for the program will come from bonds sales, available capital and other sources, officials said.
he global recession that has caused airports to resort to personnel layoffs and wage/hiring freezes also has given rise to creative thinking that is paying off in financial and operational terms. In a time of shrinking enplanements, it may sound like a sensible idea to cut back or defer maintenance as a short-term, cost saving measure.
AAE President Charles Barclay on Nov. 12 interviewed DOT Secretary Ray LaHood. The secretary and Barclay discussed, among other topics, the timing of FAA reauthorization and the need to make permanent the temporary Alternative Minimum Tax fix on private activity bonds.
